Employee Benefits

Newton Medical Center recognizes the worth of a dedicated health care team and values the contribution of each employee.  It is the policy of Newton Medical Center to provide equal employment opportunities without regard to age, race, creed, religion, color, gender, national origin, marital status or disability. The following information is a brief summary of benefits available to regular NMC employees.

Orientation
New employees receive a general orientation to Newton Medical Center and their job requirements, and an orientation to their department.

Shift & Weekend Differential
A shift differential is paid to employees who work the evening or night shift and/or weekends. The weekend differential is in addition to shift differentials.

Paid Time Off (PTO)

Paid Time Off combines vacation, holidays and personal time off into one benefit category. PTO allows flexibility to schedule time off work. Employees start earning PTO their first day of employment. The amount of PTO allowed is based on the number of hours worked. Employees working 2,080 hours annually can earn 23 days (184 hours) to 30 days (240 hours) of PTO each year, depending on the number of hours worked and length of service.

EIT

In conjunction with Paid Time Off, Newton Medical Center has established an Extended Illness Time (EIT) program for all eligible (FT & PT) employees.  EIT provides employees protection against loss of income during an extended period of their own illness.

The time in your EIT "bank" will be accrued each pay period and will be available for employees who have requested a leave of absence for their own serious illness.

Holiday Pay

Hourly employees are paid "time and a half" (their regular rate plus 50 percent) for working on designated holidays (New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas).

Bereavement Leave
An employee may be granted paid bereavement leave, up to a maximum of three days, for a death in the employee's immediate family.

Leave of Absence
The leave of absence benefit assists employees who would like additional time off for special circumstances without losing continuous employment status or benefit eligibility. A leave of absence of up to three months may be granted.

Retirement Plan
Full-time and part-time employees are eligible to participate in Newton Medical Center's 401(k) retirement plan immediately upon hire.  Eligible employees may enroll in the 401(k) plan at any time. NMC will provide a 50 percent match for up to 4 percent of an employee's voluntary contribution, (e.g., you put in 4 percent; NMC matches with 2 percent, If you put in 2 percent, NMC will match with 1 percent.)

Additionally, each fiscal year NMC may provide a performance-sharing contribution to all enrolled employees.  This contribution is based on NMC's performance and could be up to 4 percent of an enrolled employee's wages.

Health Programs

Newton Medical Center conducts a number of health surveillance programs to identify problems and illnesses for which employees may be at risk. For those wanting immunizations, NMC offers Hepatitis B, Tetanus and annual influenza vaccinations at no charge to employees. NMC maintains a corporate membership at the Newton Wellness Center. Employees receive a substantial discount on the membership fee.

Health Insurance
Employees working at least 20 hours per week on a regular basis are eligible to participate in the group health insurance program. NMC pays the largest portion of the cost of the single plan. The employee pays the remaining amount. Family coverage is available, and the additional amount is paid by the employee.

Flexible Compensation Plan
The flexible compensation plan allows employees to pay for medical and group term life insurance premiums, certain medical expenses and dependent care with pre-tax dollars.

Disability and Life Insurance

The Medical Center provides disability and life insurance coverage at no cost to eligible employees.  Additional term life insurance is available at group rates.

Voluntary Supplemental Insurance

The supplemental insurance plan allows employees to pay group-rate premiums with pre-tax dollars. Plans available through AFLAC include Personal Cancer Protector Plan, Personal Accident Plan and Personal Recovery insurance programs. The plans are available for full-time and part-time employees working at least 20 hours a week.

Onsite Child Care Center

The center is located on the NMC campus at 805 Medical Center Drive. Fees for care are comparable to other child care facilities in the area.

NMC works in cooperation with the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita, Division of Community Medicine, to regularly provide continuing education hours. These programs are free to employees.

Scholarships

The Newton Medical Center Board of Directors and the NMC Community Association (volunteer organization) offer scholarships to employees for formal education in qualifying professions. Scholarships are applied for and granted on a per-semester basis.

Tuition Reimbursement

The Tuition Reimbursement Program helps employees continue their education. Full-time employees may receive 75 percent of the tuition fee for an approved course. A part-time employee working at least 20 hours a week may receive 50 percent of the tuition fee for an approved course. Reimbursement is limited to $2,000 for a full-time employee and $1,000 for a part-time employee annually.
