Insurance Requirements
You are responsible for meeting any special requirements of your insurance plan, such as obtaining a second opinion or approval before going to the emergency room or being hospitalized.
If you have insurance which requires you to contact your primary care physician prior to going to the emergency room, you are responsible for calling your physician for approval.
Most insurance plans with this requirement have special steps which must be followed unless you are seeking treatment for a life-threatening condition. Referral forms must be sent in by your physician to your insurance company. In most cases, the hospital is not allowed to provide referral documents.
Insurance Filing
Newton Medical Center will file your insurance claim for you.
Because of special requirements by insurance companies and frequent changes in the requirements, we must have a copy of your insurance card.
When we file your insurance, we will send you a summary of the charges being filed. We will ask your insurance company to send payment directly to Newton Medical Center. We allow your insurance company time to process and pay your bill. If payment has not been received in six weeks, you will be billed for the unpaid balance.
Payment Arrangements
You may choose one of the following options:
Pay the balance in full when you get your billing statement showing the amount that is your responsibility
Pay interest-free in four equal payments
Apply for a medical line of credit through Midland Capital Resources
Newton Medical Center has contracted with Midland Capital Resources (not associated with Midland Bank) to provide a line of credit for payment of hospital expenses only. The interest rate is usually lower than that of a credit card.
A letter that lists these payment options and your summary of charges will be sent to you a few days after your dismissal, or after your insurance has paid. We ask that you contact us within 30 days of receiving this letter with your choice of one of the payment options.
Financial Assistance
Two programs are available to provide financial help:
Public Benefits Eligibility Program:
If you are unable to pay your bill, a Midland Capital Resources representative will help you apply for public assistance, such as Medicaid or disability benefits.
Health Care Assistance Program:
Newton Medical Center provides medical care free or at reduced rates for those who meet income guidelines. This program is for patients who do not have insurance or who still owe a balance after insurance has paid, but who do not qualify for public benefits.
Worker's Compensation Injuries
Reports of injuries occurring on the job, on company time, or as the result of occupational circumstances are filed with the patient's worker's compensation carrier.
If you incur a work-related injury, you are required to provide Newton Medical Center with the name and address of your employer, and to report the accident to your employer. Failure to do so may result in loss of benefits.
Health insurance generally will not pay claims determined to be work-related.
Motor Vehicle Accidents
If you sustain an injury associated with a motor vehicle, you must provide Newton Medical Center with the name of your automobile insurance carrier.
Kansas law requires that reports on injuries occurring as a result of ownership, operation, maintenance or use of a motor vehicle be filed with a motor vehicle insurance company. Any claim for an injury arising from contact with a motor vehicle, even if the vehicle is not moving, must first be filed with your motor vehicle insurance company.
Most health insurance companies will not consider the claim until it has been filed with a motor vehicle insurance company.
Property Insurance
If you have tests performed or receive medical services as a result of an accident occurring on property owned by someone else, Newton Medical Center will obtain information about the accident.
Medicare and Medicaid require us to try to collect payment from the property owner, even if the owner was not negligent or responsible for the accident.
Refusal to provide the information for billing may result in Medicare or Medicaid denying payment of the claim.
